Fire is the power that changed the world of construction

Since ancient times, fire has greatly impacted the world of construction. Throughout history and across the world there have been many great fire events. With each disaster, a greater understanding of how to build fire-safe buildings would develop to be passed down through the generations.

There have been many fire disasters in human history, each providing lessons on fire-safe building practices. Fires that burned entire cities would change concepts of construction in order to ensure safety and reducing the risk of fires.

Opus caementicium (Roman concrete) was invented in the late 3rd century BCE. After the Great Fire of Rome on July 19 64 A.D, a new safer way of building cities using this was devised. Large portions of Roman infrastructure were wooden, resulting in 2/3 of the city being destroyed in the fire. In the rebuilding of the city, Roman architects and engineers utilised stone and concrete to ensure the new structures were fire-safe. These buildings have survived to the present day, many of them in good condition. Through this, it is clear that concrete offers great safety benefits compared to traditional timber structures with brick layouts, which can easily collapse in a fire.

Building upon these essential construction lessons from ancient times, we believe that Insulated Concrete Forms are the future of fire-safe construction solutions. An ICF home can even withstand a 100km/hour critical firestorm! ICF technology not only provides resistance to fires and other natural disasters; it also insulates a structure, saves energy, and reduces maintenance costs over time.
